2019 / 2020 General Club Information

BTABC Membership

All students must obtain a membership with the Baton Twirling Association of B.C.  (BTABC).  Membership fees for students range from $45.00 to $70.00 dollars per year and are included in the lesson fee for each program. This membership provides access to events hosted by the Baton Twirling Association of British Columbia, participation in the Canadian Baton Twirling Federation's Skills Development Program, and provides insurance to all members.  This form must be completed at registration.  One or both parents are also encouraged to sign up for a volunteer membership; the cost of which is covered by the club.

Communication

Information will be communicated to our members via email.  Please check your inbox regularly to ensure that you are up to date with all club information.  General information will also be posted on www.batonswest.com and our Facebook page (Batons West Twirling Club).

Class Attire

Appropriate attire is very important as it allows coaches to fully assess body placement and ensures that athletes aren't limited in their mobility and can properly execute all twirls and tricks!  We ask that twirlers come to class ready to participate and consider the following:

               - Black bodysuit with tights and black fitted shorts/capris

               - Hair should be neatly fastened, entirely back in a bun or pony tail

               - Beige or black jazz Oxford shoes  (new twirlers can wear running shoes until Oxfords arrive)

Attendance

In order to receive full benefits from class, students must be punctual and attend regularly. Missed classes and tardiness cause your child to fall behind, making it hard on them, their team members and coaches.  Please inform your coach if your child cannot attend a lesson.  No refunds will be made for missed lessons.

Calendar

Shortly following registration, parents and athletes will receive a Batons West Calendar of Events that you can use to reference throughout the year.  Classes will not be held on statutory holidays, as we do not have access to a gym.  Should class be scheduled at an alternate location, appropriate advance notice will be given.

Competitions

Batons West generally enters 2 competitions each year.  The baton competition season is March-May.  Competition dates will be provided to you by the end of October so that you can plan accordingly.  Learn to Twirl & Pre-Competitive students will perform at one local competition. Competition fees are the responsibility of the parent and are usually about $25.00 at the beginner level.

Competitive twirlers will be expected to travel to Olympia, Washington in mid-March for a competition.    We would welcome our pre-competitive students to attend this competition as well.  Some of our competitive members have traveled to various Canadian locations to attend the National Baton Twirling Championships in July, as well as other competitions in Washington (June).

Community Events & Parades

Batons West tries to gain exposure each year by performing at local events. These events may vary from year to year.  Participation in these events is expected and advance notice will be given so parents can plan accordingly.

Fundraising

As we are a non-profit organization we depend on the fundraising efforts of our parents to help with some of the costs that are not covered by the program fees. We expect and encourage each family to participate to the best of their ability.

Parent Meetings

Batons West is a non-profit society that relies on parent participation and volunteers to run the club.  We will hold short parent meetings as required.  All parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the meetings.  Ideas are welcome and appreciated!!  Efforts will be made to have meetings during, or near the end of lesson times.

Parent Viewing

In an effort to minimize distractions for both our twirlers and coaches, parent viewing is limited to the final 10 minutes of class.

Private Lessons

For athletes who are interested, all of our coaches are available to coach private lessons.  They can be hired on a regular basis or just once in a while to assist with something specific. The rate is $25/hour.  Privates can vary in length depending on the age of the athlete, and can be short as 30 minutes.  Please advise us as soon as possible if you are interested in this option for your child.

Optional Purchases

Batons West makes every effort to see that Club track suits, sweat shirts and baton bags are available for purchase. Returning twirlers will need to purchase a club jacket.  Although not required for new twirlers, the purchase of a club jacket is encouraged.  If a jacket is not purchased, new twirlers should be prepared to wear an all black jacket for performances/competitions/community events. Subsidies may be available provided that the athlete has participated in fundraising activities, club functions and provided that funding is available.

Class Design

Class design is at the sole discretion of the coach.  While the major focus of our classes are to develop and improve the athletes’ baton twirling skills and abilities, a portion of class time is dedicated to developing dance and basic gymnastic skills.  Batons West offers instruction from certified Canadian Baton Twirling Federation coaches.
